چکیده

T, .he Proctor Medal for 1962 is to be awarded to Dr. Kenneth N. Ogle. It is my privilege to join you in honoring him on this occasion and to introduce him to you. He does not need an introduction to most of you any more than he needs still another honor, yet, because he is a highly regarded friend, I am happy to participate. He was born in Colorado, attended the public school and college at Colorado Springs, and was graduated from Colorado College cum laude. During his high school years he became interested in photography and earned most of the money he needed for college by developing and printing pictures for tourists who visited Colorado during the summer. This may be one of the factors that guided him into the field of optics. The mountains and forests and rivers of Colorado attracted him, and he developed a love of the out-of-doors. He hiked and camped and took pictures. That was some forty years ago. Since then he has dropped some of these hobbies, for he has found that the distances to the tops of the mountains have become too great and the trails too steep and the ground too hard for sleeping. However, he still takes photographs, all carefully composed and a delight to view. Early in adult life he learned to paint in oil, a hobby he has pursued with skill and enthusiasm, especially when he depicts scenes from Colorado. After graduation from college and selection of physics as a career, he spent two years at Dartmouth, a year at the University of Minnesota, and then returned to Dartmouth for his Ph.D. degree, which, of course, was awarded cum laude. He remained at Dartmouth in the Eye Institute from 1930 until 1947 when it was discontinued. Since 1947 he has been a member of the staff of the Mayo Foundation in the Section of Biophysics but has worked intimately with the Eye Section. His research work is largely in the fields of optics and binocular vision. Recently, he has extended his activities to pupillometry. When he is in Rochester, he seems constantly to be preparing for a forthcoming meeting of scientists or physicians. That he is an effective and valued committeeman is attested by the numerous committees that have sought his services. He has received several awards, the most recent only last month when he went to Sweden to receive from the University of Uppsala the degree of Doctor of Medicine, honoris causa. It is my honor now to present to Dr. Kenneth N. Ogle the Proctor Medal for 1962. C. W. Rucker

On presentation of the Proctor Medal of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology to Ruth van Heyningen.

Annually, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology honors outstanding contributions to ophthalmic research with the Proctor Medal and the Friedenwald Award. The Proctor is usually considered the senior award. However, when I observe the vigor with which this year's Proctor Medalist pursues life, I am not certain that such a description is appropriate. This award was established ...

Remarks Made on Acceptance of the Proctor Medal Award.

.0 say that I deeply appreciate the honor you have bestowed upon me would be a very true but also very incomplete statement of my feelings. Even though you have given me ten months to grow into the position of the recipient of the Proctor award, I still have serious misgivings about my qualifications. I am being haunted by a quotation from an early English comedy by George Chapman, which goes a...
